It’s no secret, I have openly shared my past mental health struggles on my YouTube channel and social media. Don’t let the world tell you that a depressed or anxious person “looks” a certain way. It is not always a person who is unkempt or with a dark cloud above their head. Mental illness is real and society does not take it serious enough.
Many times, my anxiety became debilitating for me. I could barely get out of the bed and I felt as if I was suffocating. I had anxiety attacks while I was pregnant and it felt as if my heart was beating outside of my chest as I struggled to catch my breath. Yet, despite what I was going through mentally, I had to get up, turn on the camera, and put on my “happy face.” Even when I was battling depression at my lowest state, I always smiled and responded, “I’m good” when someone asked how I was feeling.
Check on your strong friends. Check on your friend is always smiling the most or cracking jokes. Check on your friend who seems to have it all together. Check. On. Your. Friends. The sad part is, we are all facing our own internal battles. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone for help, life can become overwhelming at times. Don’t let the world tell you that admitting you need therapy makes you a weak individual.
I pray for those battling mental illness and those who silently carry a weight that’s becoming too heavy to bear. I pray for those who don’t have an amazing therapist to like I do to help them navigate their feelings. Don’t be afraid to do the hard work on healing yourself so you can become a whole and healthy individual.
I am always excited and consider it an honor to bring awareness about mental health. I love to encourage others to make mental health a priority. It’s okay to not be okay. It is merely impossible to be a healthy individual overall if you aren’t healthy mentally and emotionally. Let’s do the work to heal our trauma instead of simply moving into a new situation which allows us to escape our past.
Just because someone is smiling, that doesn’t mean they are happy. The world is better because you are in it and don’t ever let yourself or anyone else make you think otherwise ❤️
xx Candace
